AgileScotland Lunch Glasgow - REMINDER

Just a reminder that I've organised a lunch for interested AgileScotlanders this coming Monday, the 28th of August.

I've booked a table at Est Est Est, 21 St Bothwell Street (two minutes from Central Station) for 12:30pm.

Thanks to those who have offered to come along - one or two more wouldn't go amiss, so if you're free for a spot of lunch on Monday please let me know!

Cheers!

Re: AgileScotland: August 28th, Agile on the Mac, with Fraser Speirs

Hi everyone,

My apologies for this email.  But, can you please email me if you intend coming along on Monday 28th so that we can notify the security people at JPM.

Thanks,
Clarke

Hi everyone,

I'm pleased to announce that the August 2006 AgileScotland evening session will be "Agile on the Mac" presented by Fraser Speirs.

The meeting will  start at 7:30 on Monday 28th August, in the JP Morgan offices, Alhambra House, Waterloo St, in Glasgow.

"Agile on the Mac" - On Mac OS X, Cocoa and associated technologies such as Interface Builder, Cocoa Bindings, Web Kit and Core Data, provide robust support for quickly developing high-quality applications with fewer lines of code than comparable frameworks.  This talk will cover the high-level architecture of Mac OS X and then focus on the important features of these five technologies which support rapid and agile software development.

Fraser Speirs is a Software Engineer and Educator.  He runs Connected Flow a software company producing shareware for Mac OS X. He is the author of the popular iPhoto plugin, FlickrExport. Fraser also teaches Computing Studies at Cedars School of Excellence
and was formerly involved in setting up one of the first production Computing Grids in Scotland, under the Worldwide LHC Computing Grid project at CERN. Fraser holds a BSc in Software Engingeering and an MSc in Computing Science from the University of Glasgow.

My thanks to Alan Francis who (as is often the case) did the heavy lifting behind this talk.  When Alan suggested this talk he wrote " (in my head at least) ObjC/Cocoa looks like doing for the client what Rails is doing for the server".

Hope you are all enjoying your summers,

Tom Gilb one day course 18th September - more details

Hi again,

I'm posting this on behalf of Mark Davidson who is organising this course for AgileScotland.

This is a very rare opportunity to learn from Tom Gilb, one of Software Development industries true gurus and the creator of one of the first "agile" methods (EVO).  And since there is no middle man, we are able to run the course at at least half the normal commercial cost.

I've seen Tom talk several times, I've devoured three of his books, and attended two of his courses.  My own take on Agile and software development has been heavily influenced by his work.  Tom's style is often (deliberately and unashamedly) controversial.  He neither pulls his punches nor minces his words.  He doesn't need to - he has decades of being right to back him up.  Please contact Mark below to register your interest.

The venue will either be central Edinburgh or Glasgow.

We are looking to base it around his Competitive Engineering content where he takes regular software engineering and shapes it to help you stay a step ahead of your competitors. He can also cover some of Evolutionary Project Management (Evo) ideas.

I've seen some slides around these topics and they look really good and very detailed.

As always we'll be looking to keep the costs to a minimum (hopefully around £200 or so) and that depends largely on attendance. So, if you believe you'll be able to attend please drop me a line to let me know so that I can judge initial interest (I'm not looking for a firm commitment - just an indication at the moment). Your preference to location would be useful too.

As usual, after the course, Tom will also present an (obligatory) AgileScotland evening session!

Cheers,

Tom Gilb one day course 18th September - more details

Hi again,

Tom Gilb, author of the classic Principles of Software Engineering Management and more recently, Competitive Engineering, will be coming to Scotland to provide a training course on 18th September.

AgileScotland lunch Glasgow

Hi folks,

Following hot on the heels of the successful AgileScotland lunch in Edinburgh, Clarke's asked if I can help organise something similar in Glasgow.

I was thinking about somewhere central, near the stations, such as;
  • Est Est Est - 21 Bothwell Street. Italian food and a silly website http://www.estestest.co.uk/locations.php?id=79#
  • Frankenstein's - 92 West George Street. Good pub grub (they do a nice plate of Nachos)
  • Underworld - 95 Union Street. "Mexican-styled" pub (also does good Nachos - see a pattern forming?)

As with the Edinburgh event this will be an informal bite to eat and a chat for an hour.

I was planning to do this on Monday 28th August so please drop me a line if you would like to come along - and let me know where you'd prefer to eat.
